Every day, over 5,000 children receive care at a children’s hospital in Canada and by supporting me, you’ll be helping fund life-saving research at your own local children’s hospital. Funds for research are needed now more than ever, and your support will allow researchers to uncover new cures and gentler treatments for kids.
For our family, we understand the impact these hospitals can have. Our son's birth was traumatic, and he required critical care from the moment he came earthside. After enduring a 10-day stay in the NICU, we learned his immune system was underperforming and he needed continued supervision. After months of weekly blood work and exams, The Stollery informed us our sweet, barely 5 month old child, was suspected of having SCID disease (severe combined immunodeficiency) -- Dex would fail to thrive and almost certainly not survive without chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.
Facing a long-term relocation for his treatment, we made the tough decision to move back home to Ontario so that Dex could be treated at SickKids. It was the best decision we ever made.
His dedicated immunology team of world-class experts asked us for patience and precautions as they let him grow, and worked with us on slow and steady exposure to the world so his immune system could develop at its own pace.
We are incredibly grateful that today Dex is a thriving 5 year old without ever enduring life-threatening treatment. We never know if the next virus will change his trajectory, but we do know SickKids will be there if it does.
