My Reason To Run

Monday 20th Apr

As the name of the race suggests it, there are millions of (good) reasons to run for sick children.

But I’ve decided to run this May because I was a sick child myself. At the age of 14, I was diagnosed with membranous nephropathy, a rare chronic autoimmune disease.

Despite what felt like an incredibly bad hand to be dealt, I also feel so incredibly lucky.

Lucky that I was immediately referred to Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Lucky to have had Dr. Michael Zappitelli as part of my medical team.

Lucky that my disease has not come back in almost 13 years.

But most importantly, lucky that I get to share my story with you today.

So many children across the country are not granted this chance, but I’m hoping my participation in this event can shed light on rare diseases and raise funds to find cures so desperately needed.

While Dr. Zappitelli is now at SickKids in Toronto, and I live across the country on Vancouver Island, I’ve still chosen to fundraise for Montreal Children’s Hospital.

A hospital is a strange place to call home, but for a while, it was for me – all thanks to the people within the walls.
