This May, I'm taking on a 31 day running challenge in support of my local children's hospital!

Every day, over 5,000 children receive care at a children’s hospital in Canada and by supporting me, you’ll be helping fund life-saving research at your own local children’s hospital. Funds for research are needed now more than ever, and your support will allow researchers to uncover new cures and gentler treatments for kids.

Pressure goes a long way!

Tuesday 26th May
You all pushed me to the challenge of getting to 66k by the end of the month with your donations. I was SHOOK. I was SCARED. I was convinced I could not make it. But today I hit 63k, with just an easy 3k run in my future.

That pressure got me to run 17 kilometers this weekend (5k, 7k, and 5k across three days). I came back for another 5k this morning and worked on my time, trying to run a sub-30 minute 5k. I failed (by about 10 seconds), but I was SO close.

So keep pushing me. It's the final few days of the challenge, and I'm about $250 away from DOUBLING my initial fundraising goal of $750. I'm also only 7k away from DOUBLING my initial run goal of 35k.

Can we go double-or-nothing? Throw some cash to the Children's Hospital of Montreal, guys, and I'll do my part to run the rest of the way to 70 kilometers.

Meeting, extending, and meeting goals again... and maybe not...

Thursday 21st May
When I set my goal for this challenge, I initially wanted to set a goal of 40k in the month of May, thinking that was a reasonable-yet-challenging 10k per month. I could do that over two 5k running days, or I could break it into smaller runs. But then I got cold feet, and playing things a little safe, set the goal at 35k instead. In my head, however, I was holding that 40k goal, just in secret.

Yesterday, I sailed past my stretch goal to 41k in just 20 days. That worked out to just under 14 kilometers a week, which is a lot more than I expected I would be able to do.

I thought about stopping, or maybe just kind of paddling around at a light pace, logging a few more kilometers and calling it a day. Or, I could keep up the pace (pun intended). I decided to go for the latter.

So I sent out a call-to-arms: get me to $1000 raised and I'd finish the full $50k. Not thinking I'd get past that number, I said I would run an additional kilometer for each additional $10. And you all SHOWED UP, bringing me to $1,160 (and, weirdly, one cent).

That sets me a hard goal: 9k remaining to 50k, and then 16 additional kilometers. And to be honest, I am NOT sure I can run 25k in the next ten days, so I'm capping things there. You an all keep donating if you want, but I'm not a marathoner, and I'm not insane.

So here's my promise, to you all and to myself: I will TRY, but not guarantee that I can, run the rest of this race in May. I will definitely run 50k and likely more. But any additional leftover kilometers will have to roll over into June, because I don't think I'm capable of running a 5k every other day.

I'll keep you updated, and I'll do my best to do you all proud. Let's see what happens now!

Thanks as always for the continued support.

Today’s 6k brought to you by Mr Worldwide

Thursday 14th May
The title says it all…. I set out to run a 5k today but got caught up in my bad/great playlist and crushed an extra kilometer for good measure.
Thanks, Pitbull! 🫣😂

1k is stupid, but...

Wednesday 13th May
...it chips away at the goal.

Today I learned trying to run on leg day is a fool's errand.

Tomorrow will be a better day.

5k morning, tracking sucks

Friday 8th May
The last several weeks, I'd been training toward being able to run a 5k--and eventually longer--in one shot. When I set this goal, I was running one 5k a week.... or so I  thought.

Turns out, my Apple watch was mistracking my stride this whole time, giving me a much faster mile time, and allowing me to think I had "completed" distances that I hadn't actually run! I guess this is common when you mostly run on a treadmill instead of outside, but I didn't think the discrepancy would be that bad because I track outdoor walks all the time.

Since I run like the T-1000, I have a shorter stride and lower mile time than my watch was giving me credit for. So now that I've been running outside, the watch has recalibrated and I have to deal with that setback that isn't really a setback.

But this morning I ran a true 5k, based on the updated watch tracking, so I guess it isn't all bad. I'm a little slower than I would like, and the 5k was a little harder than I was used to, but I still crushed the goal.

Next goal: run 6k in one go. Then run 4 miles. And so on, until I hit 7 miles to qualify for the Falmouth Road Race. I'm counting this as a recalibrartion instead of a setback, and while it's not my favorite thing in the world, I still feel pretty good about what I can do. Apparently only 20% of Americans can run a 5k at all!

4km down, 31 to go!

Friday 1st May
I charged into May with a 4km run this morning, and not only that, I did it OUTSIDE like a maniac. Why is running outside so much harder than on a treadmill? Shouldn't it be easier because it's more interesting? Well, no. I guess hurling my bodyweight through space is a lot harder than just not letting it fall off a moving platform. But either way, my feet hit the pavement and I got off to a strong start.

There's still time to sponsor my runs to benefit the Montreal Children's Hospital. I've increased my fundraising goal to $750 so every dollar count. And for my American friends and family, don't forget the conversion works in your favor! :-D

Thanks to everyone for the support. If you had told me two years ago I'd be running at all, I'd have laughed. If you told me I'd be running 35k in a month a year ago, I also would've laughed. And if you'd told me even a few weeks ago I'd be able to do it in the real world? Falling off the chair laughing. Your support is pushing me through.

I'll be taking a break because tomorrow I'm walking 50k (!!) in the NYC Great Saunter and will need a recovery day or two, but aim to have my next run on May 5th or 6th and will update then.

Thank you!!!

Sunday 19th Apr
Wow, thanks everyone for donating. I really appreciate all of the support. You all helped me make short work of my initial fundraising goal, so I've upped the total I'd like to raise to $750 and will use the rest of April to see if I can push closer to the new goal. I'll also post a pic in my sweet tank top when it arrives!!

Can I run 35k in May?

Wednesday 15th Apr
I'll be honest. I have no idea why I signed up for this challenge. I don't even really like running. But I do like having run, and I like the idea of collaborative contests. This fundraiser is not just a personal challenge but a province-wide one as well, since each province's totals are calculated to see who can earn the most for their local children's hospitals.

I figure 35k is an attainable goal for me. I typically run a 5k per week on my cardio day at the gym, so that gets me almost 2/3 of the way there on its own, plus some smaller training runs in between. I'm actually aiming to average 10k a week so that I end with 40k, but figured for my first real challenge I would go a little easier on myself. This is especially important because I have weak calves and ankles apparently, and often risk overdoing things and hurting myself. I figure I'm not any use to the hospital if I end up in one myself!

I have no idea if I can do this or not, but if you want to support me as I try, kick a few bucks toward the Montreal Children's Hospital! I set a $500 fundraising goal because that's the fundraising point that gets you a t-shirt, and I love collecting t-shirts that fit me weird and that I never end up wearing!

Thanks to everyone for your support. I promise to try to keep my updates humorous so that if you follow along (no pressure) you're at least mildly amused.

Thank you to my donors
