Let’s do this for Emma Bean! 💪🏻
Emma Shingleton was diagnosed in February of 2021 with KAND- KIFIA associated neurological disorder, a rare neurodegenerative condition affecting around 500 people worldwide. Emma is one of 2 ever diagnosed with her specific type, making her one of the rarest children in the world. At 5 years old, she battles optic nerve atrophy, ataxia, epilepsy, hypertonia, and cerebellar atrophy, among other things. This devastating diagnosis has already robbed her of her sight, speech, and ability to walk independently.
Despite all of these struggles, Emma continues to live her life with the brightest smile and most contagious laugh. She has an infectious positivity that has taught everyone around her the value of perseverance, happiness and relentless determination.
Emma's family moved to Calgary from BC to get her support, and she visits doctors and specialists at the Alberta Children's hospital. This year our team will be running in support of Emma and all of the other children like her, who have received life saving treatment at our children's hospital. The support of the staff, volunteers, and specialists at this wonderful hospital are changing the lives of children just like Emma.
Our team is captained by her care aide, and I’m joined by all the people who support her journey 🫶🏻
